How To Fix Dead Pedal — The Problem Every Truck Owner Hates

If you’ve owned a diesel truck for any length of time, chances are you’ve experienced dead pedal at some point. It’s that frustrating delay between when you step on the accelerator and when or how much your truck actually responds. You press the throttle expecting instant power... and instead get hesitation, lag, or just flat-out nothing. It’s especially noticeable when doing things like trying to get on to the highway, taking off from a stop, towing a trailer, or even just daily driving around town. While dead pedal can be annoying at best, it can actually become dangerous in certain scenarios. But what causes this annoying lack of response and how can we fix it?  Let’s break down the causes, why it happens more often in modern diesel trucks, and how you can solve it.

What Causes Dead Pedal in Diesel Trucks?

As you will come to understand, dead pedal is not always caused by one thing. There are several factors that play into the feeling of dead pedal and your condition could be caused by one or more of these factors compounding on to each other.  Modern diesel trucks are packed full of torque management systems, emissions controls, and drivability limiters straight from the factory. The manufacturers build these trucks with tuning overhead that often sacrifices throttle response for things like fuel economy, reliability, and emissions compliance. However, if done correctly, fixing your truck's dead pedal problem does not mean you have to sacrifice any one of these.

Why EZ Lynk Is The Way To Go For Cummins 6.7L Tuning

The EZ Lynk 2.0 has quickly become one of the post popular tuning devices on the market and its easy to see why with all of its features. Now with the introduction of the Auto Agent 3.0 combined with custom tuning from Calibrated Power you can turn your 2013 to 2021 6.7L Cummins into the ultimate daily driver!

Not only can the ECM be tuned withe the EZ Lynk devices but the TCM of the 68FE transmission can be tuned as well. This is huge because it means you'll be able to put down more of the power you're able to make to the wheels. This lets you go from a performance tune where you're only able to access 60-70 extra horsepower at the wheels. To a proper +100hp tune with transmission adjustments that improve the lock-up of the torque converter and shift scheduling to enhance power delivery though out the entire usable rev range.  All with the stock emissions system fully intact. Calibrated Power actually offers a range of tuning options to go along with your EZ Lynk tuner and they can vary based on  whether your truck has a built transmission or not. Here's how much power you can expect:

Stock Transmission Tunes:

1. Heavy Tow: +20HP
2. Light Tow:  +40HP
3. Street:   +80HP
4. Race.         :     +100HP

Built Transmission Tunes:

1. Heavy Tow : +40HP
2. Light Tow   : +60HP
3. Street.        : +110HP
4. Race          : +160HP

The First 4 Upgrades To Do On 3rd Gen 5.9L Cummins

These are the first 4 upgrades you should make to your 2003-2007, 5.9L Cummins.

If you're just getting into the diesel game with a third-generation Cummins 5.9L you're on the right track. While people say the 12v motors are great for being able to handle lots of power and having lots of upgrades. The 24v is also a very solid choice for both of those same reasons. With more hp from stock than the 12v motors and some beefy internals, like forged rods that can handle over 800hp. There is lots of potential to be had.

It's a great truck from the factory, but if you're anything like the rest of us you're not interested in keeping it stock. Especially with the number of bolt-on upgrades available for the 5.9L. Why not make a great truck even better? Today we will show you the first 4 mods you should do to your 5.9L Cummins turbo diesel.

Must Have Upgrades for Your 2013 - 2018 Cummins 6.7L!

Your 6.7L Cummins NEEDS an upgrade!

The  Ram 2500 and 3500 HD pickups with a Cummins 6.7L are made for towing.  You know that. We know that. Everyone knows that. However, a lot of guys are clueless when it comes to which upgrades are worth it and which ones are a total waste of money.

WILL THESE BE THE RIGHT UPGRADES FOR YOU?

This list is based on an assumed set of circumstances. You have a 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, or 2018 model year Ram 2500 or 3500 equipped with the Cummins 6.7L diesel engine. Your truck is completely stock (no modifications) or very near stock. You have not already deleted the emissions equipment or upgraded major performance components such as the turbocharger or high-pressure fuel system.

Drivers that use their truck as a truck will find this list especially helpful. Towing, commuting, and getting it up and moving when you need it to have to be balanced with reliability and efficiency.  On the other hand, if you're looking to build a competition truck for sled pulling, drag racing or dyno competitions, our recommendations may drastically change.

  • 2013-2018, Cummins 6.7L
  • Stock or Near Stock Truck
  • Drive your truck regularly
  • 68RFE Automatic Transmission
  • Use truck for towing
  • NOT interested in building a race or competition truck
  • Cares about efficiency and reliability
  • Want superior drive-ability

Don't Delete Your Cummins DPF!

[fa icon="calendar'] Mar 25, 2021 2:30:00 PM / by Justin Tyson posted in Cummins Diesel, Cummins Tuning

One of the most misconstrued topics in the diesel world is how emissions equipment impacts your truck.  Many people believe that deleting your Cummins DPF will enhance your truck’s performance and help solve DPF/EGR failures.  Well, the data around these systems has been building up for quite some time.  With enhancements of the DPF and EGR engineering, these systems aren’t like they were when they first hit the market in 2007.5.  When Cummins moved from the 5.9L engine to the 6.7L the DPF was brand new and as with many first-generation parts, failed often.

Now, if you think that simply deleting your DPF is going to gain you 100 HP and 5 MPG, you're going to be surprised by what we have found with real-world data.  Not to mention, the current state of EPA involvement within the diesel performance community should be on your radar if you are looking for deletes. While social media, keyboard warriors may shout like they all the answers, you will want to know.

Inspecting A 600+HP 4th Gen Cummins EGR

As technology and research continue to accelerate the quality of the EGR system, it's something that due to it's poor quality at early inception has faced continual backlash.

EGRs on the cummins have been around now for over 10 years. While the infancy stage of the EGR came with many hiccups and issues amongst all the Duramax, Cummins, and Power Stroke diesel trucks. It’s understandable to see why so many dislike these emissions systems, but this isn’t the mid-2000s anymore. These systems have progressed over the years and we wanted to see exactly just how well.

It's Time To Get The Most Out Of Your Cummins

A simple tune can dramatically change the dynamic of your truck in many ways!

The Cummins has gone through so many adjustments to help benefit the truck with each new generation introduced.  We've seen convenience and comfort get pushed along too, it's all apart of getting the owner to love what they drive.  The thing truck owners love the most is how much more horsepower and torque get updated in addition to body styles and interior.  In the late 80's the 12 valve was pushing a mere 160 RWHP out of the factory.  Look at where we are at now, the CME (2013-2018) is now putting down between 350-370 RWHP depending on transmission.  That's a huge difference in the matter of a few decades.  This is amazing to see, but it doesn't mean that they've gotten all out of your truck.  As we've seen numerous times, there's always room for improvement and performance no matter which year Cummins you drive.

Let's look at some of the benefits of tuning your 2010-2019 Cummins below:
