How to use the Smarty MM3 Gauges

With the new Smarty MM3 hardware being used for Cummins equipped pickups it is important to know how to use the gauges to your benefit.  Although a few minutes in the driveway playing with the touch screen will answer a majority of your questions, this article will help you with some basics that will help you out.

There is a very simple menu screen to work with on the MM3 hardware.  In fact all of the controls to select and display PIDs are very simple.  The hardest part is resisting the urge to change PIDs when driving (it is NOT safe to change PIDs while driving).  One of the amazing features is the accuracy in which the display is presented.  For those that are curious or obsessive enough to care about 0.1 RPM, it along with most other PIDs can not be monitored with precision.

MM3 users will find a wide variety of PIDs to choose from.  They are grouped by category of measurement it seems.   if you are looking for something measured in Percentage, all the parameters measure in percentage are together.  This makes finding your desired parameter simple and quick. Furthermore, for it is much simpler for truck owners to find the most important PIDs.  For 3rd Generation body styles, there will be even more options added in the future for keeping an eye on the emissions equipment.

Below you will see the easiest things to do with your Smarty MM3.  As always, if you have any questions please call us or request more information through the button below.

How to Select a Display Screen?

At the top of the screen there are arrows on left and right.  Hit the arrow.  Boom, display screen changed.  The only drawback, is now you have to select your PIDs all over again.  Surely some crazed Cummins nut will load all four display options with completely different PIDs but most people will find the screen they like best and run with it.

How to Change PIDs?

Once you touch a PID the screen goes to a list of categories.  The categories break down ways in which parameters are measured.  Just select the category desired and a list of actual PIDs will display.  Toggle through the list and select one.  For every PID selected a final screen will come up with a brief description, current limits, current warning buzzer settings, an option to set warning or color coding, or Exit.  Hitting exit will take you back to the gauge display.

Which PIDs Are the Best to Watch?

On the forums this is a well discussed topic.  Feel free to research multiple opinions.  It is easy to get caught up in all the possibilities.  However, try to stick with the basics.  RPM is good for data logging but if you have a working tachometer and are not logging, what is the point?  Stick to parameters that can help with that.  The optional EGT probe is a great example.  Rail Pressure should be matched with Desired Rail Pressure if you are going to watch one, watch both.  On the other hand now they have Rail Pressure Differential which is cool if you know what you are looking for.  Same could be said for DPF Delta and DPF Outlet pressure.  If you know what you are looking for it could be great for diagnostics, but otherwise not much use for daily use in the pickup.  Boost pressure is a fun one watch and can help monitor overall truck performance.  In the end, just keep in mind the point of gauges are to keep the truck safe.
